Marathon By 40

my progress towards running a marathon

Hello world!

My name is Mark. I’m starting this blog a month before I turn 38 years old. I have a personal goal to run a marathon by the time I’m 40. Considering I couldn’t run a mile without walking about a year ago, this is going to be a considerable challenge.

I’m blogging here to keep track of my progress and to allow my friends an easy way to keep me accountable and encourage me to stay on track.

Let’s run!

Best of luck! Now you have an audience, you have to make progress :)

Thanks for the encouragement, Dave. It is lighting a fire under my rear-end knowing friends like you can watch me succeed (or fail). So, please do check in from time to time and kick me if I’m not running and posting.

BTW, it’s your old black iPod nano I’m using with the Nike+ kit.

Mark - this is awesome! Glad you are planning to run one and that you are doing the blog! You have plenty of time - just follow the guidelines for ramping mileage slowly so you don’t get injured. When I ran White Rock back in ‘97 I had never run until February and ran the marathon in December (but of course I was only 27 at the time). I’ve actually set a similar goal to do another marathon by 40, but I have less time than you since I’m only 16 months away.

Have you even thought about choosing a race yet? I have several friends who have run many marathons (one will run his 15th I’m December), so I’m sure they could make suggestions down the road if you’d like.

    John

Awesome! From my 38.5-yr-old perspective, this is an encouragement to bring running back. If not running… walking. If not walking, then elliptical-izing. If not that… then laying around, all sad, eating chips.

    Go, Mark, Go!

John, Paul, and Ringo Aaron (I couldn’t resist) … thanks for stopping by and offering the encouragement!

John, I’ll check FB on Sunday to see if Wichita was really Hotter than Hell this weekend. I’m only familiar because my father-in-law has ridden it more times than I can remember. Last time I tried White Rock Trail (the full trail, not just the lake) was probably 7 years ago. I’m eager to hear how you do this weekend. Good luck!

Paul, heh. I’m planning on a dish of Blue Bell Cookies and Cream as soon as I finish posting this.

Aaron, I’m intrigued by Galloway’s method and will certainly look into it when I reach the marathon stage of my plan. When are you planning on running? This year? Next? It would be fun to come out and watch if you’re going to run before I do. Let me know.
