One reason I chose running a marathon over cycling, a triathalon, or other physical endeavors is the lack of investment required. Really, one can make due with a decent pair of shoes and not much else. But, being a gadget-freak, I had to invest in some additional equipment to aid in training.

Brooks Men’s Adrenaline GTS 9 Running Shoe - I need the support and stability of these Brooks’ shoes. My shin splints disappeared when I switched to these from the Nike shoes I was wearing before.
I recently purchased the Polar F6 Men’s Heart Rate Monitor Watch as my friends have talked about success they had with heart monitor training. Until the 10k I run in October, I’ll likely just use it to collect data. Once I determine an accurate Maximum Heart Rate (MHR) during the race, I’ll use that in calculations to determine a HRM program to use after.

Apple Nike + iPod Sport Kit for iPod nano 1G, 2G, 3G - The Nike+ system helps me keep track of distance and time for each workout. It’s rewarding to watch the miles add up and the average pace increase over time.

Apple iPod Nano - The Nike+ works in conjunction with the iPod Nano. I’ve been listening to Robert’s Couch to 5k podcasts for interval training. Some mornings I simply listen to other tech or theology podcasts.

Nike+ Sport Arm Band - Nike’s armband holds the iPod and sensor nicely. I wear it on my forearm as I run for easy access to check current time, distance, and pace. While the fabric is neoprene-like, it is certainly not waterproof. I fried my first iPod Nano running with this armband in the rain. Thankfully, I was able to buy my current Nano second-hand from Dave shortly after. Thanks, Dave!
